Carbon fiber introduction

Carbon fiber is a kind of a fiber with the carbon content higher than 90%. It is well known for its high carbon content. Carbon fiber has various performance advantages from the element carbon; for example, it is lightweight, heat resistant, resistant to thermal shocks, resistant to chemical erosion, and electrically conductive in nature. In addition, it has the flexibility of fiber and excellent mechanical properties.

There are numerous ways of classifying the types of carbon fibers; and they can be classified according to the raw material and the mechanical performance. By classifying according to the manufacturing raw materials, they can be classified into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) carbon fibers, pitch-based carbon fibers and rayon carbon fiber. Most of the current structural materials use PAN carbon fibers. By classifying according to its mechanical properties, they can be classified into (1) ultra-high modulus (UHM) carbon fibers, (2) high modulus (HM) carbon fibers, (3) ultra-high strength (UHS) carbon fibers, and (4) high strength (HS) carbon fiber.

Properties of carbon fibers

PAN carbon fiber and its composite material have the following characteristics. The content recited in the brackets are the characteristics of the fiber's axial direction of the carbon fiber.

(8)Has thermal conductivity (10-160Wm-1K-1)
(9)Excellent resistance to heat in inert gases
(10)Has electrical conductivity (17-5uΩ·m)
(11)Has electromagnetic wave shielding property
(12)Excellent for X-ray permeability
(13)Belongs to multiple conductivity material, proper structures can be designed according to its purpose of use

In Taiwan, since Formosa Corporation introduced the PAN carbonization technology from the U.S. Hitco Corporation in 1985, the quality of the carbon fiber manufactured by the company became competitive with that of Japanese manufacturers. Currently, its annual production has been increased to 8750 tons.

Description of spun

Since it is of high strength and electrical conductivity, the spun fiber manufactured by Taiwan Formosa can be trimmed to proper length after starching according to the needs of the customers, followed by the addition of the plastic particles for injection in order to be manufactured into components of machines, such as gears, chemical vacuum tubes, computer chassis and other products. The manufactured products have the excellent properties of corrosion resistance, high fatigue strength, high strength, as well as high rigidity.
Typically, our spun fiber is a rectangular sheet with a length of 6mm, and it can be specially made to reach the length of 108mm as a spun fiber product for special applications. The spun fiber sheet can cooperate with various types of plastics and resin based adhesive articles.
